Abide

If you say you cannot abide someone (or something), it means you do not like him/her (or the thing you are talking about).

For example,

a. He can't abide her.

b. She can't abide him.

c. They can't abide commitment.

d. We can't abide irresponsible behaviour.

Synonyms: abhor, dislike

If you abide by something (an agreement, decision, or rule), you accept or obey it.

For example,

a. The cricketers must abide by the umpire's decision.

b. We should abide by the traffic rules. (An example I don't know how many times I have used 😂😂😂)

Synonyms: obey, follow

We can also use 'abide' as an adjective (e.g. "abiding memory", "abiding interest").

If you have an abiding memory, feeling or interest, it means you have had it for a long time.

a. My abiding memory is of her in the library.

b. She had an abiding interest in cats.
