Ad hoc
Ad hoc is borrowed from Latin. It literally means "to this". In English, however, the sense it conveys is "for this specific purpose".
So, what does "Ad hoc" mean and how do we use it in a sentence?
If you use it as an adverb, it would mean "for a specific purpose when needed".
For example,
a. The anti-ragging committee was formed ad hoc.
b. The decision was taken ad hoc.
If you use it as an adjective, it would mean "done for a particular end when needed".
For example,
c. The authorities have formed an ad hoc committee to investigate the issue at hand.
d. Although the discussions are on an ad hoc basis for the time being, we are sure a decision will be taken soon.
