MARVEL'S CAPTAIN MARVEL (2019): REVIEW 

Before I went for the movie, I had checked its rating on both IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. While IMDb had given it 7.1 stars out of 10 based on 108382 views, the Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes was only 58%. So, you can understand the initial review was pretty ambiguous. And, I think it was because of the first half which took its time to grow the movie into a fine spectacle after the interval. In addition, Brie Larson as Carol Danvers did not quite sit well with many comic-book fans. But, since, I like watching cinematic representations of texts from the so-called popular genre, I regarded the movie as a text in itself, and not as an object of comparison. 

It depicts the psychological journey of a young woman who begins to realize her potential through a series of events. Through the various glimpses of her past, she pieces together who she really is by teaming up with Fury.  

The fun factor had always been there with the previous movies. And, this one does not stand out as an exception. In fact, Samuel L. Jackson has all the best dialogues in this latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Marvel has always excelled in showcasing the human-machine interaction in all of their previous ventures. So, when it comes to the use of CGI, if I call it believable, it would be an understatement.  

However, it seemed extremely easy for our superhero to triumph over the evil. That is the only reason I am a bit concerned about her inclusion in Endgame. 

This isn't an exceptional movie. But, it is an important one in the context of what is to follow. Honestly speaking, I thought Brie Larson did justice to her role. But, she could not do justice to Captain Marvel, the character, because of the vision of the director. 

There are two kinds of feminists in this world: 

i. People who talk about women empowerment and female emancipation in order to sell their product,

ii. People who talk about women empowerment and female emancipation in order to make us understand why we should respect a fellow human being irrespective of one's sex.  

A cunning businessperson, who belongs to the first category, pretends that one belongs to the second one. Unfortunately, even if one truly belongs to the second category, people might still consider that person fake. I think this movie may fall prey to the notion that we have just discussed.

I know the direction is not up to the mark. But, still, you should go for it. 

I will give it 7 out of 10.
